Daily Habits to Improve Dental Health

Just because a person doesn’t end up in the dentist’s chair doesn’t mean they can’t be proactive about their oral health. Here are some daily behaviors one should incorporate into their routine to keep their oral health at peak.

Brushing Techniques

Brushing teeth effectively, efficiently, and for the right duration is important. To avoid gum tissue injury, brush twice daily in a circular motion with medium pressure.

Remember to brush the tongue. Plaque can appear as a white film on the tongue’s surface, discoloring the muscle. Brushing the tongue improves dental health and prevents halitosis (bad breath).

Floss

Make sure to floss on all sides of the tooth. Work the floss around each tooth in a “C” motion to clean the interproximal areas a toothbrush can’t reach.

Use Products that Contain Fluoride

Using products with fluoride is an excellent and simple way to improve oral health. It prevents tooth decay by slowing enamel breakdown and increasing the rate of remineralization. Tooth enamel is hard and porous. As a result, plaque on the teeth’s surface can release acids that enter the pores of the enamel, causing it to break down from within. If not corrected, a weak region may form, resulting in a cavity. Use fluoride-containing toothpaste and mouthwash to improve dental hygiene.

Drink Lots of Water

Many are unaware of the impact drinking water regularly can have on dental health. Simply sipping water while eating helps to remove extra food particles that may have become lodged between the teeth. Water is the best beverage for improving dental health because it does not discolor or harm teeth!

Eat Healthily

In some way or another, what a person eats affects their teeth. Fresh fruits and vegetables, for example, are high in nutrients that benefit gums and protect against cell damage.

Chewing on a crisp apple, carrots, or celery can be good for your teeth! They will not only aid in removing plaque from the teeth but will also naturally freshen the breath.
