Furniture is one of the best things to buy secondhand, but only if you pick the right pieces. You can furnish your home affordably by taking your time to choose high-quality pieces that are in good condition. However, if you don’t pay close attention to a few key factors, the used furniture you choose could be a waste of money – or a health and safety hazard.
Follow these rules for buying used furniture to avoid making bad decisions.
Don’t Buy Used Mattresses
Mattresses are among the worst items to buy used. While it may be tempting, the savings are not worth it. Mattresses are capable of absorbing odors, stains, and even hazardous substances. Buying used bedding increases your chances of bringing mold, bed bugs, and dust mites into your home.
Look for Signs of Structural Damage
Before purchasing any used furniture, thoroughly inspect each piece for signs of significant damage. While cosmetic blemishes can be easily touched up or repaired, structural damage will be more complex and costly. Inspect the piece for cracks, broken legs or supports, and signs of previous repairs. Any of these is a red flag that the furniture may not be structurally sound.
Examine the Area for Signs of Infestation
Termites and bed bugs are two types of insects that may be hiding in used furniture.
You may notice visible damage when inspecting the interior or base of termite-infested wooden furniture. Frass (termite droppings) and piles of shed termite wings are other signs of termites. Don’t consider purchasing the item if you notice any of these signs.
Bed bugs aren’t just found in old mattresses but in upholstered sofas, chairs, and other fabric-covered furniture. Put on white latex gloves and go through the furniture with your fingers to check for bed bugs. Look for any movement, skin, or dark red feces.
Check for Mold
Mold is a serious health risk, particularly for people with allergies or asthma. If you buy a piece of furniture with mold growing on or inside it, the mold could spread and ruin other furniture and fixtures in your home.
Inspect used furniture thoroughly, looking inside drawers, cabinets, and the base.
Examine the Item’s Condition and Comfort
Aside from inspecting each piece of furniture for potential health or safety issues, it’s also critical to ensure that you only buy furniture that is in usable condition. You should also try out chairs and sofas to ensure they are comfortable enough to sit on.
